7/25/67 = 46

The stars are aligning?  I am turning 46 years old on the day training camp opens.  The coach of my favorite team is the son of the coach that invented the 46 defense, which in 1985 produced arguably the greatest defense of all time for a single season.  The son has the personnel in place to play lots of 46 in 2013.  The Dad was a defensive assistant when this particular 46 year-old was in diapers when said favorite team won Super Bowl III.  So the stars have aligned?  Well, if said favorite team was any other team but the J E T S, maybe.  That said team has not been back to the big game since Mickey Mantle had yet to announce his retirement.  Contrary to popular belief, gang green is not even close to the worst team in the league on paper, and they have been one of the better franchises in the NFL the past 16 years, but on that same paper, nor are they a good team.  But games are not played on paper.  In 44 days, when #6 stares down his receiver and #24 on the other team has a pick 6, I might be wishing the games were played on paper.

46 is the # Donnie Baseball wore when he was first called up in 1982.

On my wife’s 46th birthday, the Bronx Bombers won their 27th championship.

I was born 46 years after my paternal grandparents arrived at Ellis Island.  Just like a 9 year-old boy named Vito Corleone, they did not speak English, but unlike the young Don, they did not have smallpox, so they were not quarantined for 3 months.

Bernard King scored 46 points in games 2 & 3 of the 1st round of the playoffs @ Detroit in 1984.  In the decisive game 5, which was the best 6+ minutes of pro hoops I have ever seen, Bernard only scored 44, including 4 in OT, as the Knickerbockers withstood 16 points from Isaiah Thomas in the last 2 minutes of regulation which sent the game into OT.  Kevin McHale said “he won’t get 30 against us.”  7 games later, the champ Celts were taken to the brink in part because Bernard went for 43 and 44 in 2 of the Knick wins.

46 is how many majors we thought Tiger Woods would have by now.

46 is what you are looking for if the point is 10……unless you are pinhead schmuck who goes $25 on the hard 10 when you only have $5 on the line with double odds.

46 is how many saves Dave Righetti recorded in 1986 – which set a new single season record.  That was the same weekend Wade Boggs sat out the last game of the season to all but the clinch the batting title.  Donnie Baseball needed a 6 for 6 day to catch him.  He homered in his first at bat and then fizzled out.  I was listening on the radio driving to the swamps for a JETS-Bills game.  That was the game when Ben Dreith made the famous “giving him the business” roughing the passer call on Marty Lyons – and he got the # wrong when he said 99 instead of 93.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eslz06J9hFw

46 is how many more f-bombs said than birdies made were spoken by Tiger at Muirfield Sunday.

46 is how many times Clark Gillies beat the piss out of Terry O’reilly in the 1980 playoffs.  Actually, for the record, Judge Stitz scored it 3-1-1 in favor of Jethro.  For comic relief here is the Bruin homer announcer   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD4TB7J7NMM

46 is how many majors Phil might end up with.  After that 66, doesn’t he have 41 more in him?  How about this stat:  Tiger won 14 majors before he was 33.  Phil has won 5 since he was 33.

46 + 8 = Rangers cup drought 1940-1954

46 + 40 = Sox Series drought 1918-2004

46 + ????? = Mets eventual series drought J 1986 – the planet blows up

2013 + 99 = 2112…..and the meek shall inherit the earth

46 barring a miracle = J E T S super bowl drought 1968 – 20xx sanity

46 = Joe DiMaggio’s home runs hit in 1937.  The Yankee Clipper batted from the right side.  He played in a park where left center field was 457 and dead center was 461.  And he most likely did not hit any cheap “late on the swing” taters to right center as that fence stood 407.  A Yankee coach charted that in 77 home games Joltin’ Joe hit 29 balls to death valley of 430+ feet that were recorded as outs.

46 + 30 = how many Dead shows I was lucky enough to attend.

46 at least = I hope how many pancakes of d-linemen my son’s flag football team offensive line racks up this season, I am the Offensive Line Coach.

46 = # of personal fouls Ronnie Lott would be called for each season if he played in this flag football era of the NFL

46 = how many years Aaron Hernandez will serve before he is eligible for parole if he is found guilty.  I am thoroughly disgusted with Kraft and Belichick.  I cannot believe they are spewing the company line of “we need to look at our processes….” Just because the sharks in the media are circling.  Are you kidding me?    They knew this kid was trouble, that was why he slipped 3 rounds in the draft – it is called RISK-REWARD!  How in the hell are they supposed to determine if someone they drafted is going to be involved in a murder case?  And let’s not forget that #81 has yet to be convicted so let’s not presume anything.  Everyone gets their day in court – remember, it was a Boston citizen, and founding father, John Adams that defended the redcoats in the Boston Massacre Trial 225+ years ago because “everyone is entitled to justice if our system of government is going to work.”

46 seconds = how many seconds I stared at the screen a couple of months ago when Homer Bill Simmons justified the Pats letting Welker leave by saying “maybe this was Bill’s punishment for Wes’ words about Rex that got the JETS so fired up in the playoffs 3 years ago.”  Yeah, cause it is only a meaningless playoff game, good thing the other team had a reason to get fired up, otherwise they would have went through the motions.   It is that kind of crap which makes fans of 31 other teams despise these pompous fans.  Always an excuse.  Instead of just saying “we were dominated.”

46 = how many more years I will have to work if this shitball economy does not improve.

46 -27 = how many consecutive playoff series the Islanders won from 1980 – 1984………a record that may be as unbreakable as Joe D’s 56 game hitting streak.

46 – 45.8 = Mr. Dorfman’s GPA, fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son

46 * 1,000 = # of dead people in Cook County who voted for Obama in 2008 (was probably more in 2012)

46 = how many fouls Louisville committed in the 1st half in the backcourt against Colorado St. in round 2 in March, did you watch that game?  DO THE MATH!

46 + 270 = # of men who survived the USS Indianapolis sinking 68 years ago; the rest eaten by sharks.

46 -2 = # of years since Chappaquiddick.  And 7 times since that homicide, myopic fools who care more about a political party than justice and what the USA stands for sent a murderer to the Senate.

46 * 2 = how many points Bernard would have scored in the ’84 playoffs vs. Boston each game if Larry Legend would have guarded him, as he should have, small forward vs. small forward.  Bernard guarded Larry, where was the reciprocation?

46 = what I needed to shoot on the front 9 2 weeks ago in order to break 90.  Instead I shot a 48 and came home in 43 for a 91.

46 + 20 = how many games over .500 the 1998 Bronx Bombers were.

46 – 30 = how many runs a week the 2013 Bronx Bombers score (assuming there are 7 games!!!)

46 = how many names Randall Flagg, aka the Dark Man, aka the Walkin’ Dude, aka the Hardcase, aka etc….goes by.

46 - 46 = how many books top my personal list as being better than “The Stand.”   Part of my annual birthday routine is to re-read this all-time great piece of literature.  This year, it is the original 1978 version.  I alternate years between the original, and the 1990 version where King added in 400 pages that were chopped out of the original version .

46 = approx. how many books I have devoured over the last 30 years that deal with the Korean and Vietnam Wars.   To recap, the “party of peace” (ok to stop throwing up now) got the country into these wars, thank you HST, JFK, & LBJ.  And the other party of supposed warmongers ended  both wars – thank you Ike and RMN.   46 * 1,000 + 11,000 = how many US citizens JFK sentenced to death by sending “advisors” to Nam just so he could be labeled “tough” on Communism and get re-elected (with the help of the dead voters in Cook County) in 1964.  Yet neither JFK nor LBJ went to congress to ask for troops as they knew nobody wanted war.  So if nobody wanted war, why didn’t they just level with the public and say “who cares about this place?  It is 8,000 miles away, if it becomes Communist it will just be one more slice of the globe that will realize this oppressive economic and social system that will fail, eventually.”

46 – 10 years + 1 day = the day my family moved from Rockaway Beach out to the suburbs.  And thus, I had played my final baseball game on an asphalt playground.

46 – 1 = how many days until the green & white takes the field against TB!!!
